His father, Arthur Washington Lithgow III (1915-2004) was a theatrical producer and director who ran McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey. His mother, Sarah Jane Lithgow (née Price) (1917-2012), was a retired actress. Lithgow was born on October 19, 1945, in Rochester, New York.
